Welcome to
the Valley AIRNow homepage for
Winchester-Frederick County, VA! |
The Northern Shenandoah Valley enjoys a high quality of life. The
quality of our region's air has a great impact on the health of our
regional citizens, and our community's economic development. Air
pollution is no longer a problem solely experienced by huge
metropolitan areas.
Meteorological conditions, coupled with a growing population,
increases the opportunities for air pollution to be a problem for
the region. As we look at our region's future, we can do something
to
sustain good air quality.
Who we are

Valley AIRNow is a unique public education and outreach
program developed by the Northern Shenandoah Valley Air Quality
Improvement Task Force (AQITF, or Task Force) to help reduce air
pollution. The Task Force is a coalition of local governments,
businesses, educational institutions, and civic and environmental
organizations committed to improving air quality in the Northern
Shenandoah Valley area through voluntary actions.
Valley AIRNow seeks to inform the public about the link
between their lifestyle choices and air pollution by emphasizing
simple measures they can take to improve the overall air quality of
the Northern Shenandoah Valley area.
The
Valley AIRNow Outreach Team was created in response to the
Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) imminent designation of
the City of Winchester and Frederick County as being in
non-attainment with the 8-hour ozone air quality standard. In lieu
of being designated a non-attainment area, the governments of
Winchester and Frederick County entered into a proactive, voluntary
agreement, an Ozone Early Action Plan, with EPA to work to improve
air quality in the region. The Outreach Team develops and
coordinates activities that hope to achieve the goals of the Ozone
Early Action Plan for 2005-2007. The mission of the Task Force is
seeking to accelerate the improvement for our community's and
region's air quality for long-term vitality and prosperity for the
entire community, governments, businesses and citizens alike.
Our Mission
